Peter J Cullen, FCIArb has acted as a sole ICC arbitrator and as a panel member in ad hoc, AMAC and UNCITRAL Model Law arbitrations, in addition to being counsel for clients involved in international (ad hoc, AMAC, LMAA, SIAC, SMA and UNCITRAL Model Law) arbitrations, domestic arbitrations and mediations. These disputes have involved insurance, licensing and distribution agreements, sale of goods, carriage of goods, ship construction/repair/design, chartering, agency and trade matters and related contract issues.
He holds degrees in both civil and common law (McGill University, BCL, LLB) and a Diploma in International Arbitration (CIArb, UK). He practices in both the French and English languages and is a member of the Bars of Québec (1981) and Ontario (1990). He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (arbitrating member of the CIArb Canada Branch) and, in addition to being an arbitrating member of the ICC Canada Arbitration Committee, is a member of the LCIA and an arbitrating member of AMAC (the Association of Maritime Arbitrators of Canada - former Director and Chair of the Rules Committee). He is also a member of the Singapore International Arbitration Centre's Users Council and the LCIA’s North America Users Council.
Peter is an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Maritime Law Association (President 2003 - 2005) and a Titulary Member of the Comite Maritime International (member of the Audit Committee and of the International Working Group on Polar Shipping). He is also a member of the International Bar Association (member of the arbitration, insurance and transport - former North America Regional Officer - committees), and a former member of council of the Canadian Bar Association (Chair of the National Sections Council, Chair of the National Maritime Law Section).
He is a partner with the law firm Stikeman Elliott LLP and is based in the firm's Montreal office (member of the firm’s national arbitration, energy and insurance practice groups). He is listed in the 2019 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada (alternative dispute resolution, insurance law, international arbitration and maritime law) and is named as a leading international lawyer by such publications as Chambers Canada 2018 (Transportation, Shipping), The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory 2018 (international commercial arbitration), the Legal 500 Canada 2018 and Lexpert/ ROB Special Edition: Canada's Leading Energy Lawyers, August 2018. He was named the Best Lawyers' 2015 Montreal Alternative Dispute Resolution Lawyer of the Year, and the Best Lawyers in Canada 2019 Lawyer of the Year in Maritime Law.
