Biography

Tom Hawkins is a Director with Secretariat Advisors (Canada) Ltd in Toronto. Tom has been appointed as a lead quantum expert witness on multiple occasions and is an Arbitrator on CIArb’s Business Arbitration Scheme. He is recognized by Lexology as one of the leading Construction Expert Future Leaders likely to be a pre-eminent name of the next generation.

Tom is a quantity surveyor and chartered construction manager with 17+ years of industry experience, obtained from working across a variety of sectors on construction and engineering projects in Canada, UK, Europe, Africa, Middle East, and Asia. Tom specializes in quantum and damages claims on complex construction projects, with experience on matters with claim amounts up to CA$2 billion.

Tom obtained a Master’s Degree in Construction Law & Dispute Resolution from King’s College London. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2016 and is the founding Chair of the Canada Branch Young Members Group (YMG). He is an active member of the CIArb community and is regularly involved in many CIArb initiatives, including as a former member of the CIArb YMG Global Steering Committee and the CIArb Adjudication Steering Group.

He has regularly been invited to produce articles and deliver presentations on quantity surveying and dispute resolution. Tom was invited as a guest on highly rated construction podcast series Own the Build to discuss the topic: “How to avoid disputes in construction?”
