Biography
Martin Valasek is a leading lawyer in the field of international arbitration and has extensive experience in investor-state disputes and commercial contract disputes. He frequently acts as legal counsel and as an arbitrator, and heads Bennett Jones LLP’s international arbitration team in Canada.
His experience spans numerous legal regimes and a wide range of sectors, including the aerospace industry, banking, construction, mining, energy, environmental remediation, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. He has successfully advised clients on transactions and disputes governed by, amongst others, the rules of the ICC, CAIL, ICSID and UNCITRAL, as well as the rules applicable to institutional and ad hoc arbitrations. He has acted as an arbitrator and as secretary to the tribunal in several high-profile arbitration cases, including the multi-billion-dollar Yukos arbitration governed by the Energy Charter Treaty. Martin is frequently invited to give lectures and publish articles on his areas of practice.
Martin speaks English, French, and Czech fluently, and has a working knowledge of Spanish.
