Biography

Professor Janet Walker is an independent arbitrator at Toronto Arbitration Chambers, Atkin Chambers in London, and Sydney Arbitration Chambers. She has served as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator, and chair in ad hoc arbitrations and ICC-, ICDR-, DIAC-, HKIAC-, KCAB-, PCA-, and SIAC-administered arbitrations in a variety of seats. Her matters include construction, M&A, shareholder, intellectual property, pharmaceutical, and environmental disputes.

Janet is a distinguished research professor and past Associate Dean of Osgoode Hall Law School. She authors Canada’s main text on private international law, which has been cited in more than 400 judgments; she also co-authored both Civil Procedure, a required text for Canadian law students, andthe third edition of Commercial Arbitration in Australia under the Model Law. Janet continues to serve as an executive editor of the Canadian Journal of Commercial Arbitration.

Janet is a member of many institutional panels, including those of the ACICA, AIAC, BVI, CAA, CIETAC, HKIAC, ICDR, JCAA, KCAB, SIAC, and Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Ukrainian Chambers. She is called to the bar of Ontario, is a licensed foreign legal consultant in New York State, and has working proficiency in both French and Spanish.

In 2021, Janet was appointed to the Order of Canada for her knowledge of arbitration and services to the Canadian legal community. She was the recipient of the CIArb Canada Award for Distinguished Service to Arbitration in 2018, and has been recognized regularly in legal directories – including Who’s Who Legal, Chambers & Partners, and Best Lawyers – since 2010. Janet is a past chair of the ICC Canada Arbitration Committee, was the founding chair of CIArb Canada’s Ontario Chapter (then called the Toronto Chapter), and is a founding co-chair of CanArbWeek. She has been a member of the CIArb Canada Board of Directors since the Branch’s inception in 2017.
